TOURISM PRICE INDEX FOURTH QUARTER
2001
Introduction
As the winter season started slowly, the Tourism Price Index (TPI) for
the fourth-quarter of 2001 stood at a level of 159.54, up 39.17 percentage
points when compared to the previous quarter September 2001 which stood at
114.64. A year earlier (December 2000) the index stood at 123.19 which
translates to a 29.51 percentage points increase for the current period..
Subgroup Comparison
Despite the slow start of the winter season, the TPI reflected an
overall increase Package Travel/Tours returned to its December 2000 rate,
thereby increasing the subgroup's index by 53.20 percent. Accommodation
rates, after remaining at their summer values for a longer period than
normal, inflated the Accommodation subgroup by 54.82 percent; a 28.72
percentage point increase over the same period a year earlier. Beverage
increased by 0.77 percent due to the rise in prices of consumer good.
Clothing & Jewelry indicted a 8.49 percent increase while
Transportation registered a 1.09 percent increase. Recreation & Sporting
Activities showed a 53.04 percent increase due to the high rates of sport
fishing. Miscellaneous, the last of the subgroups, indicted a 0.71 percent
increase due to the higher prices of souvenir ornaments.
An Annual Comparative Overview
On an annual comparison, all the subgroups showed significant increases with the
exception of Package Travel, which remained unchanged.
Accommodation increased by 47.17 percent, Food & Beverage rose by
5.23 percent, Clothing & Jewelry by 8.92 percent, Transportation by
5.19 percent, Recreation & Sporting Activities by 56.21 percent while
Miscellaneous Tourism Expense rose by 4.63 percent.
