TOURISM PRICE INDEX SECOND QUARTER
2001
Introduction
The Tourism Price Index (TPI) for the second quarter (June) of 2001
fell by 11 percentage to reach an index level of 133.65.The previous
quarter (March 2001) stood at an index of 150.41. One year earlier (June
2000) the index stood at 120.01.
Subgroup Comparison
As tourism-oriented businesses trimmed their rates for the upcoming
summer season, the TPI reflected a decline in three of its major
subgroups. Package Travel to the British Virgins fell by 25.3 percent;
Hotel and charter boat accommodation reduced the Accommodation subgroup
subgroup by 12.58 percent while the Food and Beverage subgroup fell by a
0.4 percent for the period. Clothing & Jewelry and Transportation
were the only subgroups to indicate an increase moving by 0.40 and 2.74
percent respectively. Recreation & Sporting Activities and
Miscellaneous Tourist expenditure remained unchanged for the period.
An Annual Comparative Overview
On an annual comparison, all the subgroups showed increases with the
exception of Package Travel, which declined by 5.47 percent and Miscellaneous, which declined by 0.35 percent.
Accommodation rose by 19.881 percent, Food & Beverage by 0.48 percent,
Clothing & Jewelry by 1.03 percent and Transportation by 2.86
percent. Recreation & Sporting Activities remained unchanged for the
period.

The
