TOURISM PRICE INDEX THIRD QUARTER
2001
Introduction
As the summer draws to a close the Tourism Price Index (TPI) for the
third-quarter of 2001 stood at 114.64, down 14.22 percentage points when
compared to the previous quarter June 2001 which stood at 102.12. A year
earlier (September 2000) the index stood at 102.12. The annual comparison indicates
a 12.26 percentage points increase.
Subgroup Comparison
At the trough of the tourism slow season, The TPI reflected other drops
as Travel consultants and hoteliers continue to lower their rates in an
effort to intrigue travelers. As a result Package Travel/Tours and
Accommodation declined by 9.91 and 21.65 percent respectively. On the
other hand, the other subgroups such as Food & Beverage increased by
2.78 percent due to the rise in prices of consumer goods during the
quarter. Clothing & Jewelry remain unchanged for the period while
Transportation, Recreation & Sporting Activities and Miscellaneous
Tourism Expense increased by 0.36, 2.07 and 3.89 percent respectively.
An Annual Comparative Overview
On an annual comparison, all the subgroups showed significant increases with the
exception of Package Travel, which remained unchanged.
Accommodation increased by 19.87 percent, Food & Beverage rose by
5.00 percent, Clothing & Jewelry rose by 1.03 percent, and
Transportation took a 3.23 percent increase. Recreation & Sporting
Activities rose by 2.07 percent while Miscellaneous Tourism Expense rose
by 3.52 percent.
