THE ASPIRATIONS OF OUR PEOPLE
For the past decade
the people of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) have experienced an expanding economy,
rising standards of living and better conditions of living. Our economy has become more
integrated in global markets, our people more exposed to international competition and our
natural environment has become more challenging. During the past decade government, in its
drive for good governance and democracy, has come to understand, respect and strive for
the aspirations of the people of the British Virgin Islands. Today, as a key feature of
its leadership philosophy, the Government of the BVI has committed itself to satisfy the
desire our people unconditionally.
- We believe that British Virgin
Islanders aspire for a strong and diversified economy that is growing in a
sustainable way to ensure financial security.
- We have learned that our people are conscious
of their environment and simultaneously they want it used in a sustainable way to ensure
that future generations might benefit equally from it.
- We understand that British Virgin
Islanders want more than accountability, transparency, responsibility and responsiveness.
They
want a government that uses their resources efficiently to obtain the best from their
level of resources.
- We are aware the British Virgin
Islanders want to benefit from advances in medical technology and that nutrition impacts
on life and regular exercise is beneficial to health. British Virgin Islanders want
to live healthier, longer lives.
- We realize that the future
production processes of this globalized world economy will be highly dependent on
Information and Knowledge. In fact, as we cross from the Information Age to the Knowledge
Age, British Virgin Islanders want to be better educated and better trained
to face the challenges of the globalized world.
- We have seen that British Virgin
Islanders desire to live in communities in which they feel there is common ground and they
are accepted. Our people desire to live in safe, ordered and well serviced
communities.
- We are cognizant of the importance
of social cohesiveness and the desire of British Virgin Islanders to live in a society
where social groups and networks are the foundation. British Virgin Islanders want
to live in a socially cohesive society.
- We observed the importance of
knowing what is happening and participating in activities with the Rest of the World. The
export industries of tourism and financial services dictate our constant awareness of what
is happening in the world community. British Virgin Islanders have this burning
desire to be well connected to the Rest of the World.
