Introduction
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of April
2002 stood at 126.8, slightly down from 126.9 recorded for the previous
month (March 2002). One year earlier the index stood at 126.0.
Monthly Comparison
The subgroup responsible for the decrease in the monthly
index was Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup falling by 0.34 percent
due mainly to the downward movements in prices of milk, cereal and
whisky. Furniture & Household supplies increased by 0.13 percent due
to higher prices of toilet paper, aluminum foil and disinfectants. The
Miscellaneous subgroup also showed an increase of 0.23 percent due to
the higher prices of mainly toothpaste. The other subgroups namely
Housing, Clothing & Footwear, Transportation and Services all
remained unchanged for the period under review.
Annual Comparison
On an annual comparison all the subgroups indicated
significant increases with the exception of Clothing & Footwear,
which indicted a 5.49 percent decrease and Miscellaneous which declined
by 1.00 percent. Food, Beverage & Tobacco rose by 2.15 percent,
Housing rose by 0.53 percent. The Furniture & Household Supplies
subgroup registered the largest increase of 3.74 percent followed by
Transportation with 2.36 percent. The services subgroup recorded the
lowest increase of 0.42 percent.
Rate of Inflation
The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation
stood at -0.08 and 0.63 percent respectively.
