Introduction
At the mid-year 2002, the Consumer Price Index (CPI)
stood at 127.1. Both the proceeding previous month (May 2002) and the
previous quarter ( March 2002) stood 126.9. Half-year earlier
(December 2001) the index stood at 126.7. For the same period June
2001, one year earlier the index stood at 126.9.
Monthly Comparison
The subgroups mainly responsible for the increase in the monthly
index were(1) Clothing &
Footwear, which increased by 0.17 percent due mainly to the rises in
prices of pampers and men's undergarment; and (2) The Transportation
subgroup which had the largest increase of 3.35 percent due to the
higher prices of new vehicles and vehicle routine service charges.
Despite the overall rise in the index, four(4) subgroups declined.
Housing decreased by 0.45 percent due to the lower cost of house
insurance; Furniture & Household
Supplies reduced by 1.00 percent because of the decline in prices of
washing machines, color TV's, microwave ovens and computers, The
Services subgroup declined by 0.34 percent as a result of the fall in
prices of vitamins and hairdressing services, and Miscellaneous fell by
0.31 from a decrease in the price of Musical Instruments. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco
subgroup remained unchanged for the period under review.
Quarter Comparison
The quarterly comparison showed an increase of 0.18
percent as Clothing & Footwear rose by 0.22 percent and
Transportation went up by 3.35 percent. Despite the overall increase
five subgroups showed declines in the quarterly comparison. Food,
Beverage & Tobacco fell by 0.27 percent, Housing went down 0.44
percent, Furniture & Household Supplies decreased by 0.65, Ser vices
fell by 0.22 and Miscellaneous went down by 0.05.
Half-Year Comparison
The half -year comparison between December 2001 and June
2002, the index indicated both significant increases and decreases. The
subgroups Food Beverage and Tobacco and Transportation indicated
increased of 0.59 percent and 3.05 percent respectively, while Housing,
Furniture and Household Supplies, Clothing and Footwear, Services and
Miscellaneous showed percent declines of 0.45,0.34,0.09,0.17 and 0.78
respectively.
Annual Comparison
On an annual comparison three (3)subgroups indicted
decreases. Clothing & Footwear fell by 5.25 percent, Services
declined by 0.50 and Miscellaneous decreased by 1.92 percent. All the other subgroups
indicated increases. Food, Beverage & Tobacco rose by 1.71 percent,
Housing
by 0.08 percent, Furniture & Household Supplies by 0.34 percent and Transportation
with the largest increase of 4.84 percent.
Rate of Inflation
The point-to-point monthly, quarterly, half-year and annual
rate of inflation
stood at 0.16,0.18,0.32 and 0.16 percent respectively.
