Introduction
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of May 2002 stood at
126.9, up from 126.8 for the previous
month (April 2002). One year earlier the index stood at 126.1.
Monthly Comparison
The subgroup responsible for the increase in the monthly
index were Food, Beverage & Tobacco which increased by 0.08 percent.
This was caused by the higher prices of chicken legs, onions and rice. Furniture & Household
Supplies increased by 0.20 percent due
to higher prices of disinfectants and liquid bleaches. The Clothing &
Footwear subgroup showed a 0.09 percent increase due to the increased
price of pampers. Services registered a 0.08 percent increase due to the
upward movement in the prices of cough syrup and vitamins. The other
subgroups namely Housing, Transportation and Miscellaneous all remained
unchanged for the period under review.
Annual Comparison
On an annual comparison three (3) of the seven (7) subgroups
declined. Clothing & Footwear fell by 5.41 percent, Miscellaneous by
1.23 percent and Services by 0.17 percent. The other subgroups showed
increases. Food, Beverage & Tobacco increased by 2.15 percent, and Housing
by 0.53 percent. The Furniture & Household Supplies
subgroup recorded the largest increase of 4.09 percent followed by
Transportation with 2.36 percent.
Rate of Inflation
The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation
stood at 0.08 and 0.63 percent respectively.
