Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of September 2002 stood at 126.8, down from the 126.9 as recorded in the previous month ( August 2002). One year earlier the index stood at 126.8.

Monthly Comparison

The subgroups responsible for the decline in the monthly index were Clothing & Footwear which fell by 0.69 percent, due to a decrease in the price of ladies dresses and men's pant. Transportation on the other hand, fell by 0.50 percent due to a decrease in the price of bicycles, while the miscellaneous subgroup showed a 0.39 percent decline due mainly to reduced  prices of toothpaste. Despite the overall decrease in the index two subgroups increased. Food, Beverage & Tobacco rose  by 0.34 percent due to rising prices of hamburgers and carrots while furniture and Household Supplies subgroup increased by 0.13 percent as a result of higher prices of detergents and aluminum foil. The other subgroups, Housing and Services remained unchanged for the period under review.

Quarterly Comparison

The quarterly comparison showed a decrease of 0.24 percent for Food, Beverage & Tobacco which fell by 0.25, Clothing & Footwear down 0.61 percent, Transportation by 0.08 percent and Miscellaneous 0.39 percent. Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup on the other hand, showed an increase of 0.27 percent, while house subgroup remained unchanged.

Annual Comparison

On an annual comparison four of the seven subgroups indicated a decline. Furniture & Household Supplies fell by 1.00 percent, Clothing & Footwear by 3.20 percent, Services subgroup by 0.67 percent and Miscellaneous fell by 0.55 percent. The other subgroups reflected the following increases: Food, Beverage & Tobacco increased by 0.76 percent; Housing 0.08 percent and Transportation 4.84 percent increase.

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly, quarterly and annual rate of inflation stood at -0.08, -0.24 and 0.00 percent respectively.
