Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of September 2003 stood at a 132.2 index level, whereas the previous month (August 2003) the index stood at 131.2. A quarter earlier (June 2003) the index stood at 133.1 and the corresponding period a year earlier (September 2002) stood at 126.8.

Monthly Comparison

The subgroups mainly responsible for the downward changes in the monthly index were: Food, Beverage & Tobacco which declined by 0.05 percent due mainly to the downward movement in the prices of Chicken leg, tinned tuna, cooking oils, tomato ketchup, fruits and vegetable and juices; Furniture & Household Supplies which declined by 4.02 percent due to the lower price of detergents, garbage bags and gas range. Clothing & Footwear which fell by 0.81 percent due to the fall in the cost of pamper, ladies' dress, men's pants and ladies and men shoes. All the other subgroups namely Housing, Transportation, Services, and Miscellaneous remained unchanged for the period in review.

Quarter Comparison     

As per the quarterly comparison the following subgroups were responsible for the decline in the index. The quarterly of Furniture and Household Supplies, declined by 4.00 percent, Clothing & Footwear by 0.80 percent, Miscellaneous fell by 0.24 percent. Food, Beverage & Tobacco was the only  subgroup to indicate an increase, rising by 0.27 6 percent. The other subgroups namely Housing, Transportation, and Services remained unchanged for the period.

Annual Comparison

No subgroup registered a decline in the annual comparison. Food, Beverage & Tobacco increased by 1.74 percent; Housing by 0.40 percent; Furniture & Household Supplies  by 4.09 percent; Clothing & Footwear by 0.49percent, Transportation by 6.33;Services by 22.56 percent and Miscellaneous rose by 4.18 percent . 

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly, quarterly and annual rates of inflation stood at -0.73,-0.63 and 4.28 percent respectively.
