Introduction
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of April 2005 stood
at 133.92. The pervious month (March 2005) CPI stood at 133.84. One year earlier
(April 2004), the index stood at 132.69.
Monthly Comparison
In a monthly comparison, there were some slight changes
within the subgroups. There were no decreases in the monthly comparison.
On the other hand there were increases in the Food, Beverage &
Tobacco subgroup by 0.09 percentage points due to the upward movement in
cost of cheese (cheddar), Potatoes (White) and Vegetable oil. The Miscellaneous
subgroup increased by 0.63 percentage points due to an increase in the
price of Toothpaste. All the other subgroups remain unchanged namely
Housing, Furniture & Household Supplies, Clothing & Footwear, Transportation
and Services.
Annual Comparison
In an annual comparison, changes were recorded in all of
the subgroups. The Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup and Transportation
subgroup fell by 0.30 and 0.36 percentage points respectively. On the
other hand, the Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup registered an increase
of 2.38 percentage points, while the Housing subgroup increased by 0.19
percentage points. Clothing & Footwear recorded an upward movement of
1.17 percentage points, Services rose 1.88 percentage points and the
Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 0.60 percentage points.
Rate of Inflation
The point-to-point monthly and annual
rate of inflation
stood at 0.05, and 0.92 percent respectively.
