Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of May 2005 stood at 134.14. The pervious month (April 2005) CPI stood at 133.92. One year earlier (May 2004), stood at 132.77.  

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were some slight changes within the subgroups. The first subgroup - Food, Beverage & Tobacco went up by 0.43 percentage points due to the upward movement in cost of Tomato Ketchup, Butter (Margarine), Mayonnaise, Carrot and Rice. Furniture & Household Supplies Subgroup, increased by 0.10 percentage points due to increases in the cost of Toilet Paper, Liquid Bleaches, Insecticide and Disinfectants. The Clothing & Footwear Subgroup rose by 0.16 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Pampers. Services subgroup went up by 1.07 percentage points due to the upward movement of Vitamins and Aspirin/Paracetamol and the Miscellaneous Subgroup had a decrease of 1.84 percentage points due to the downward cost of Hair Preparation. All the other subgroups - Housing and Transportation remained unchanged.

Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, changes were recorded in all of the subgroups. The Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup, Transportation and Miscellaneous subgroups fell by 0.23, 0.36 and 1.26 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, the Food, Beverage &  Tobacco Subgroup registered an increase of 2.55 percentage points, while the Housing Subgroup increased by 0.19 percentage points. Clothing & Footwear Subgroup recorded an upward movement of 1.44 percentage points and Services Subgroup rose 2.97 percentage points.

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rate of inflation stood at 0.16, and 1.03 percent respectively.
