The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of August 2005 stood at 136.6.THe previous month (July 2005) CPI stood at 136.4. One year earlier (August 2004) stood at 133.3. Monthly Comparison In a monthly comparison, there were some slight changes within the subgroups. The first subgroup- Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup went up by 0.58 percentage points due to the upward movement in cost of Chicken (Legs), Whisky and Vegetable oils. Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup, increased by 0.17 percentage points due to increases in the cost of Liquid Bleaches and Disinfectants. The Clothing & Footwear subgroup rose by 0.05 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Pampers. Miscellaneous subgroup went up by 0.24 percentage points due to the upwards movement of Toilet Soap and Hair Preparations and the Services subgroup had a decrease of 0.09 percentage points due to the downward cost of Aspirin/Paracetamol. All the other subgroups- Housing and Transportation remained unchanged. Annual Comparison In an annual comparison, changes were recorded in most of the subgroups. The Furniture & Household Supplies and Miscellaneous subgroups fell by 0.5, and 4.2 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, the Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup registered an increase of 4.3 percentage points, while the Housing subgroup increased by 7.2 percentage points. Clothing & Footwear subgroup recorded an upward movement of 1.3 percentage points and Services subgroup rose by 1.3 percentage points. Transportation subgroup remained unchanged. Rate of Inflation The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.17 and 2.5 percent respectively. TABLE 1
