Introduction
At the end of 2005, the Consumer Price Index CPI stood
at 136.91 whereas the previous month November 2005 the index stood
at 137.5. A quarter earlier September 2005 the index stood at 137.63 and
a half-year earlier June 2005 the index CPI stood
at 136.30.Regarding the same period a year earlier December 2004 the
index stood at 133.71.
Monthly Comparison
On a monthly comparison, there were changes in all the subgroups. The subgroups
that showed increases were Food ,
Beverage & Tobacco which increased by 0.03 percentage points as a
result of higher prices of Cheese, Rice, Tomatoes and Ham and Cheese
sandwiches. Clothing and Footwear subgroup increased by 0.94 percentage
points due to the higher prices of ladies Dresses. Services
subgroup increased by 0.46 percentage points due to an increase in the
prices of pens. On the other hand the subgroups which showed decreases
were
Housing which decreased by 2.06 percentage points due to a
reduction in the price of Paints. Furniture & Household
Supplies decreased by 1.09 percentage points due to the reduced cost of
Insecticides and Gas Ranges. Miscellaneous subgroup decreased by 0.11
percentage points due to the reduced cost in the price of toilet soap
and the Transportation subgroup which decreased by 0.58 percentage
points due to the reduced cost in gasoline.
Quarterly Comparison
On a quarterly comparison, there were decreases in all
the subgroups except for (2) two subgroups which were Clothing and
Footwear which went up by 0.76 percentage points and Services
which also went up by 0.41 percentage points. The Subgroup which showed
decreases were Food, Beverage & Tobacco which went down by 0.12
percentage points, Housing which went down by 2.06 percentage points,
Furniture & Household Supplies which went down by 0.90 percentage
points, Transportation which went down by 0.74 percentage points
and Miscellaneous which went down by 0.27 percentage points.
Half-Yearly Comparison
The half-yearly comparison between June and December of
2005 indices reflected the following changes in the subgroups.
Food , Beverage & Tobacco rose by 1.78 percent points, Clothing and
Footwear rose by 1.40 percentage points, Transportation rose by 2.27
percentage points, Services rose by 0.30 percentage points while
Furniture & Household Supplies dropped by 1.48 percentage points
Annual Comparison
On an annual comparison, the subgroups reflected the
following significant changes; Food, Beverage & Tobacco
increased by 3.66 percentage points. Housing subgroup increased by 5.04
percentage points, Clothing and Footwear subgroup increased
by 1.91 percentage points, Transportation subgroup indicated an increase
of 2.25 percentage points , Services subgroup increased by 1.67
percentage points while the Miscellaneous subgroups move up to 0.79
percentage points. Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup decreased
by 1.84 percentage points.
Rate of Inflation
The point-to-point monthly, quarterly, half yearly and annual
rate of inflation
stood at -0.46, -0.53, 0.45 and 2.39 percent respectively.
