Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of March 2005 stood at 133.86. The pervious month (February 2005) the CPI stood at 133.77. One Quarter earlier ( December 2004), the index stood at 133.71 and one year earlier (March 2004), the index stood at 132.56.  

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were some slight changes within the subgroups. The first subgroup - Food, Beverage & Tobacco went up by 0.01 percentage points due to the upward movement in cost of Chicken ( Whole), onions, Potatoes ( White), Orange Juice, Tea Bags and Rum. Furniture & Household Supplies, increased by 0.12 percentage points due to increases in the cost of Detergents ( soap -powder), Liquid Bleaches and disinfectants. The Clothing & Footwear subgroup rose by 0.08 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of socks and Miscellaneous subgroup had a change of 0.67 percentage points due to the upward cost of Toilet Soap. All the other subgroups- Housing, , Transportation and Services remained unchanged.

Quarterly Comparison

On a quarterly comparison, Food , Beverage & Tobacco rose by 0.23 percentage points. Furniture & Household Supplies increased by 0.05 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear went up by 0.8 percentage points and Miscellaneous by 0.67 percentage points while Housing, Transportation and Services remind unchanged.

Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, changes were recorded in all of the subgroups. The Furniture & Household Supplies, Transportation and Miscellaneous groups fell by 0.15, 0.36 and 0.16 percentage points respectively. On the other hand, the  Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup registered an increase of 2.70 percentage points, while the Housing subgroup increased by 0.19 percentage points.  Clothing & Footwear recorded an upward movement of 1.17 percentage points and Services rose by 1.88 percentage points. 

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly, quarterly  and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.06, 0.11 and 0.98 percent respectively.
