Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of( April 2006) stood at 138.99. There was a slight alteration from the previous month ( March 2006) which stood at 138.61. One  year earlier ( April 2005), the index stood at 133.92.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were slight changes in some of the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 0.49 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of Pork Chops, Chocolate ( Milo), and Whisky.  Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup increased by  0.40 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Disinfectants and Detergents ( Soap Powder). Transportation subgroup which increased by 1.16 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Gasoline. The Services subgroup, increased by 0.10 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Aspirin/Paracetamol and Pens. The Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 0.23 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Toilet Soap. There was a decline in the Clothing and Footwear subgroup which decreased by 0.19 percentage points due to the decline in the cost of Pampers. The Housing subgroup remained unchanged. 

 Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, there was an  increase in all the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 5.91 percentage points, Housing subgroup increased  by 4.59 percentage points, The  Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup increased by 3.80 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear subgroup increased by 2.58 percentage points, Transportation subgroup increased by 2.64 percentage points, Services subgroup increased by 1.81 percentage points, and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 0.64 percentage points. 

 

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.27 and 3.78 percentage points respectively.
