Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of ( August 2006) stood at 139.93. There was a slight decrease from the previous month ( July 2006) which stood at 140.11. One year earlier ( August 2005), the index stood at 136.61.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were decreases in some of the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup decreased by 0.36 percentage points due to the downward movements in the price of Chicken (Whole), Fish, Eggs and Vegetable oils. Furniture & Household Supplies decreased by 0.08 percentage points due to the decline in the cost of Liquid Bleaches and Toilet Paper. Services subgroup decreased by 0.17 percentage points due to the decrease in the cost of vitamins and pens. Miscellaneous subgroup decreased by 0.86 percentage points due to the reduced in Toilet Soap. On the other hand, Transportation subgroup increased by 0.33 percentage points due to the upward movement in the cost of gasoline. The subgroup which remained unchanged were Housing, Clothing & Footwear.

Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, there were changes in the following subgroup. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 3.79 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear subgroup registered an increase of 2.22 percentage points, Transportation subgroup increased by 2.00 percentage points, Services subgroup increased by 11.10 percentage points and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 6.11 percentage points. The subgroups which showed decreases were the Housing subgroup, which decreased by 2.02 percentage points and Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup which decreased by 1.16 percentage points.

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at -0.13 and 2.43 percentage points respectively.
