Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of (February) 2006 stood at 137.31. There was a slight alteration from the previous month ( January 2006) which stood at 137.07. One year earlier ( February 2005), the index stood at 133.77.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were increases in most of the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 0.19 percentage points due to the upward  movements in the price of Mayonnaise, Potatoes and Rum. Furniture & Household Supplies increased by 0.04 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Garbage bags and Insecticides. Clothing and Footwear subgroup increased by 0.33 percentage points due to the upward movements in the cost of Pampers. Services subgroup increased by 0.07 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of Pens. The Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 1.39 percentage points due to the upward movement price in Toilet soap. The Housing and the Transportation subgroups remained unchanged. 

Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, there was one subgroup which  showed a decline.  In the  Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup there was a decrease by 1.72 percentage points. On the other hand all the other subgroups showed increases. The Food, Beverage &  Tobacco subgroup increased by 4.08 percentage points, Housing subgroup increased by 5.04 percentage points, Clothing and  Footwear  subgroup registered an increase of   2.35 percentage points, and the Transportation subgroup increased by 2.19 percentage points , Services subgroup increased by 1.73 percentage points and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 2.19 percentage points.  

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.17 and 2.64 percentage points respectively.
