Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of (January) 2006 stood at 137.07. There was a slight alteration from previous month ( December 2005) which stood at 136.91. One year earlier ( January 2005), the index stood at 133.73.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were slight changes in some of the subgroups. The  Food , Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 0.45 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of   Sweet Peppers, Tomatoes, Beef ( ground), and Pork chops. Furniture & Household Supplies increased by 0.01 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Disinfectants and Insecticides. Clothing and Footwear subgroup increased by 0.10 percentage points due to a rise in the cost of Pampers. The subgroups which showed declines were: The Transportation subgroup which decreased by 0.01 percentage points due to the reduction cost of Cough syrups/rubs. Housing and Miscellaneous subgroups remained unchanged.

Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, the following significant changes were reflected. In the Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup there was a decrease by 1.79 percentage points. On the other hand all the other subgroups showed increases. The Food, Beverage &  Tobacco subgroup increased by 4.03 percentage points, Housing subgroup increased by 5.04 percentage points, Clothing and  Footwear  subgroup registered an increase of   2.01 percentage points, and the Transportation subgroup increased by 2.19 percentage points , Services subgroup increased by 1.66 percentage points and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 0.79 percentage points.  

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.12 and 2.50 percentage points respectively.
