The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of ( May 2006) stood at 139.46. There was a slight alteration from the previous month ( April 2006) which stood at 138.99. One year earlier ( May 2005), the index stood at 134.14. Monthly Comparison In a monthly comparison, there were increases in most of the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 0.18 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of Beef ( ground), Onions and Corn Flakes ( Kellogg's. Furniture & Household Supplies increased by 0.10 percentage points due to the increase in the cost of Insecticides and Detergents ( Soap Powder). The Clothing & Footwear subgroup increased by 0.01 percentage points due to the upward movement in the cost of Pampers. Transportation subgroup increased by 1.80 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of Gasoline. The Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 1.13 percentage points due to the upward movement price in Tooth Paste. The Housing and Services subgroups remained unchanged. Annual Comparison In an annual comparison, the subgroups showed no decline. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 5.65 percentage points, Housing subgroup increased by 4.59 percentage points, Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup increased by 3.80 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear subgroup registered an increase by 2.42 percentage points, and the Transportation subgroup increased by 4.49 percentage points, Services subgroup increased by 0.73 percentage points, and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 3.69 percentage points.
Rate of Inflation The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.34 and 3.97 percentage points respectively. TABLE 1
