Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of  November 2006 stood at 140.42. There was a slight decrease from the previous month ( October 2006) which stood at 140.60. One  year earlier ( November 2005), the index stood at 137.5.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were decreases in the following subgroups. The  Food, Beverage & Tobacco decreased by -0.40 percentage points due mainly to the fall in the cost of Tea (bags) Mayonnaise and Whisky; Clothing & Footwear subgroup decreased by -0.01 percentage points due to the decline in the cost of pampers; Miscellaneous subgroup decreased by -0.65 percentage points due to the drop in the cost of Toothpaste. On the other hand the subgroups that showed increases were Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup increased by 0.03 percentage points due to the rise in the cost  of Liquid Bleaches, Disinfectants and Insecticides, and the Services subgroup increased by 0.02 percentage points due to upward movement in the cost of cough syrups/ rubs and pens. The subgroup which remained unchanged were Housing and Transportation subgroups.

  Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, there were changes in the following subgroup. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 3.45  percentage points, Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup registered an increase by 0.93 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear increased by 2.54 percentage points; Services subgroup increased 11.17 percentage points and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 1.59 percentage points. The subgroups which showed decreases were Housing subgroup which decreased by -2.02 and Transportation subgroup which decreased by -0.85 percentage points.

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly and annual rates of inflation stood at -0.13 and 2.10 percentage points respectively.
