Introduction

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of ( September 2006) stood at 140.55. There was a small increase from the previous month ( August 2006) which stood at 139.93. One  year earlier ( September 2005), the index stood at 137.63.

Monthly Comparison

In a monthly comparison, there were three increases in several of the subgroups. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 0.36 percentage points due to the upward movements in the price of Chicken (legs), Beef (Ground), Sweet Pepper and rum. Furniture & Household Supplies  increased by  1.53 percentage points due to the rise in the cost of Disinfectants, Toilet Paper, Garbage Bags. Services subgroup increased by 0.01 percentage points due to the advance in the cost of Aspirin and Paracetamol. Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 1.07 percentage points due to the enhance price in Lotion, Books and Magazines. There were no decreases in any of the subgroups. The subgroup which remained unchanged were Housing and Transportation.

Quarter Comparison

In the quarterly comparison increases were recorded in several of the subgroups, Food Beverage & Tobacco which increased by 0.20 percentage points, Clothing & Footwear which increased by 0.72 percentage points, Transportation subgroup which increased by 0.33 percentage points and Miscellaneous subgroup which increased by -0.16 percentage points. The Housing subgroup remained unchanged in the quarter comparison. 

 Annual Comparison

In an annual comparison, there were changes in the following subgroup. The Food, Beverage & Tobacco subgroup increased by 3.38  percentage points, Clothing & Footwear subgroup registered an  increase of 2.41 percentage points, Services subgroup increased 11.09 percentage points, Furniture & Household Supplies subgroup increased by 1.11 and Miscellaneous subgroup increased by 2.73 percentage points. The subgroups which showed decreases were the  Housing subgroup, which decreased by 2.02 percentage points and Transportation subgroup which decreased by 1.00 percentage points.

Rate of Inflation

The point-to-point monthly, quarterly  and annual rates of inflation stood at 0.44, 0.39 and 2.12 percentage points respectively.
