Trellis Bay to Get New Public Jetty
TRELLIS BAY TO GET NEW PUBLIC JETTY
Monday, February 20 – Chief Minister Honourable Dr. D. Orlando Smith is pleased that work will soon begin on a new Government jetty in Trellis Bay.
The Chief Minister’s word came at the signing of a contract to reconstruct that public dock. A contract worth just over $149,000 was signed last Thursday with representatives from the BVI firm, Road Runner Construction.
The Chief Minister signed on behalf of Government, while Mr. Bettito Frett signed as the contractor.
Minister for Communication and Works Honourable J. Alvin Christopher witnessed the Chief Minister’s signature, while Mr. Gregory Hodge signed as witness for Road Runner Construction.
Contract works will include demolition of the present dock and construction of a new, larger, T-shaped jetty in its place.
The Chief Minister said the Trellis Bay public jetty has been in a “bad state of disrepair” for a long time, to the disadvantage of many people including fishermen and persons
traveling between Tortola and sister islands including Virgin Gorda, Scrub Island, and Necker Island.
“Trellis Bay has increasingly become a hub of activity with more tourism related events happening there,” the Chief Minister said, noting that as a consequence there is an increase in the movement of people that makes it essential for the jetty to be rebuilt.
Minister for Communication and Works Honourable J. Alvin Christopher said that construction of the new jetty is part of a broader development plan for the area.
“We are working on a complete development plan for Trellis Bay, which would include a tourism outpost to better accommodate our visitors
traveling to Virgin Gorda, and other sister islands, from the airport,” the Minister said.
The project to rebuild the public jetty at Trellis Bay was publicly tendered and Road Runner Construction was the bidder chosen by the Public Tenders Committee.
Work on the new public jetty in Trellis Bay began today and will continue for six months.
