2012 ANNUAL NATIONAL ACCOUNTS SURVEY

The National Accounts Survey is an annual survey conducted by the Development Planning Unit (DPU) that gathers data on the operations of businesses in the Virgin Islands.  A sample of businesses across the industries in the Territory is selected and asked to submit data on income, expenses, inventory, assets, and financing.  Data for the financial years 2012 is being sought in this fifth annual survey for the DPU.  In this year's survey, in additional to the financial data being requested, businesses are also being asked to provide information on their use of information communication technologies, and on events that may have affected them in 2012.

The data gathered from the survey is used, along with data from government, mainly to produce annual national accounts statistics which is a direct measure of how well the various sectors of the Virgin Islands economy are performing.  National Accounts Statistics is primarily used by businesses and organizations to make decisions about investment and expansion, and by government to develop policies and evaluate existing projects.  As in all countries that produce this statistics, it is produced in accordance with the Systems of National Accounts (SNA) issued by the United Nations Statistical Commission. In addition, the data gathered from the survey will form a key component in the compilation of Balance of Payments Statistics, which is a body of statistics that shows the performance of the economy as it relates to transactions with the rest of the world.

A hard copy of the survey package (cover and instruction pages, sector questionnaire, index guide, and user guide) would be made available upon request by a business.  However, an electronic copy can be downloaded from http://www.dpu.gov.vg/  under Surveys.  The questionnaire can either be downloaded and printed, or completed online.  If downloaded, completed questionnaires can be returned by hand or emailed to DPU using MRichmond@gov.vg, AHerbert@gov.vg, KFrett@gov.vg, or dpu@gov.vg, no later than March 29, 2013.  If you have any difficulty in downloading the questionnaire, or completing it online, please contact Adriana Herbert by telephone (284)494-3701 ext 3275 or through email at AHerbert@gov.vg .
